OK Scott may have had much better weekends than his two 5th places and a sixth at Brands Hatch at the weekend just gone but his confidence and determination to do the job are very much in tact. His latest blog will appear here later today.

In fact the situation is now extremely clear as freak circumstances aside, there are now only two drivers that can win this championship and they are both called Scott! Scott Pye, financially backed by the Australian Motor Sports Federation has been sent here to conquer the British Formula Ford scene as his predecessor Mark Webber did more than a decade ago. Only Scott Malvern can stop him. And I’ll say this much, biased as I obviously am but Scott put in the performance of his life this weekend to earn those three top six finishes for which he had to work much harder than any of his many podiums this season.

There are still two events, five championship rounds and a maximum of 155 points to play for. The circuits will both be new to Scott, Donington Park where he races on the support bill of the British Touring Car Championship on the weekend of 18-19th Sept and the legendary Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit the following weekend 25-26th September.

What I am asking you all to do now is to keep working very hard on Scott’s behalf for the climax of the season to ensure he is in the best position he can be to finish the job and try to win the title. Many of you have done a fantastic job for Scott this season by either supporting him financially or finding additional backers to fund him and I just ask that you all continue for a little longer to find whatever you can. Everything, and I do mean everything, helps right now and whetever we can get in to help complete the season will be very much appreciated by Scott and the team.

Kindest regards

As many of you know Scott was with us at last year’s karting event helping Johnny support our chosen charity so we thought it was only right that we post the following (from Dominic Malvern). Please give any support you can.

This is really a ‘please to you all’ to see if any of you, or anyone you can think of, can help Scott get to the end of the championship. The next six to eight weeks are critical with the whole of the second half of the championship condensed into the period between 14th August and 26th September.

Scott, the race team and all of the sponsors have done a fantastic job to date and the fruit of our considerable effort is that Scott leads the championship at the halfway stage of the season. It cannot be under stated what a fantastic achievement this is as Scott is a complete under dog in this situation. He is driving a car manufactured by minnow company Raysport, who were given no chance in this championship. The car was considered uncompetitive against the might of the French giant Mygale company who have won this championship for the past five years. Indeed the Ray’s last podium finish was back in 2007 and then it was driven by the very highly rated Nick Tandy who is currently very much a championship contender in the International Porsche Supercup that supports Formula One Grand Prix events.

Scott’s achievements have now been recognised by the British Racing Drivers Club (BRDC) who have bestowed him with the honour of Rising Star Status. If he can hold onto his championship lead for just five more race weekends he will without doubt be nominated as one of six drivers for the McLaren BRDC Autosport Young Driver of the Year Award. Being nominated alone is a great honour. Winning it adds enormous prestige along with £50,000 towards next year’s race budget and a prize that money cannot buy; a Formula One test with McLaren Racing.

Does Scott have it in him to emulate the achievements of Jenson Button or Lewis Hamilton? Well he is certainly on the right track. Jenson Button won the British Formula Ford Championship at his first attempt in 1998. The points advantage that he held at the half way stage of the season wasn’t as good as the one that Scott holds now! Not much more is needed now to keep Scott in the car for the remainder of the season. We have already raised and spent over two thirds of the budget and now just need to find the last bit to help Scott finish the job and put himself in pole position for a career in professional motor racing. Please do whatever you can to help.

Kindest regards

Dominic Malvern
Mobile 07890.117414

PS Please do not forget Scott’s charity karting evening in aid of Haven House Children’s Hospice on 1st September at Brentwood Raceway (Warley, Essex). Please support this very cause.

I raced against Danny in Karts 20 years ago and have watched him grow into the fantastic race driver that he is today, at Le-Mans a few weeks ago he set many records including a 1st place in the LMP2 class ( highest acheived by an LMP2 car ) and also the farthest distance covered too, you can see the full results and check out Danny’s team at http://www.strakkaracing.com you can also click on the link to Danny’s webb site too, Fiona is no slouch either having once been a top BTCC driver!!

We wish them every happiness for the future

The name is a guarantee of quality. Johnny Herbert is set to join the SUPERSTARS SERIES family for this season’s INTERNATIONAL SERIES. After entring 160 Formula One Grand Prix over 12 seasons, Herbert is set to join the 500-hp saloon racecar series sanctioned by ROMA FORMULA FUTURO. He’ll partner with Motorzone Race Car, and run a Chevrolet Lumina CR8.

Joining reigning title holder Gianni Morbidelli, Andrea Chiesa, Emanuele Naspetti and Mimmo Schiattarella, Herbert will add his name to the toll of former F1 racers in the 2010 SUPERSTARS SERIES.

Herbert will also take his sensational experience to the team, already featuring the contribution of Technical Director Giuseppe Angiulli and Renato Melchioretto. After making its debut in 2009, Motorzone Race Car enjoyed a successful first stint, as the team’s brand-new Chevrolet Lumina CR8 took an outstanding maiden win at Kyalami. Driver and Team Manager Fabrizio Armetta had a great part in the team’s success too, and proved decisive in the talks with the British star.

First race 28th March Monza
“I’m extremely happy to enter the 2010 SUPERSTARS INTERNATIONAL SERIES – told Johnny Herbert – I can’t wait to battle my old friends and rivals from Formula 1, Morbidelli, Naspetti, Chiesa, and the other great names coming in the next few weeks. SUPERSTARS has grown so much in the last years and I’m sure this will be really competitive season too. Being part of the Motorzone Race Car team will be challenging, since it’s going to be tough to improve their great 2009 results, with Armetta scoring an excellent win at Kyalami. I’m sure we’ll put on a great show, with so many cars like Audi, Bmw, Mercedes, Porsche, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Jaguar, Cadillac and Maserati. We’re set to have a great roster on March 28 at Monza, for the season’s debut”.

“The arrival of Johnny Herbert – told Fabrizio Armetta – is a privilege and an honour for our team. It’s also a great motivation to take a further step and keep working the best possible way to suit and enable him to show his full potential. It’ll also be a test for us, as we’ll be called to confirm the quality we showed so far at an even higher level. Of course, our goal is also to profit from Herbert’s experience to help the team’s growth”

With thanks to ‘Harry’ who posted this information on the Johnny Herbert Forum

Every economic, social and health issue can be improved by the provision of education which is why we are so devoted to this cause. Needless to say the problems facing us are huge.

We can only operate due to the continued and generous support of many individuals and organisations who share our vision that – to learn is to live.About the Trust

Founded in 1997, the Harry Birrell Scholarship Trust has been supporting children, in Africa, to have a quality secondary education. Financial need and suitable aptitude are the criteria used.

Harry Birrell, an Oxford Blue in rugby and cricket, taught at St Andrew’s College Grahamstown, where he also had been both a student and housemaster. His great attribute was to inspire young people to make a success of their lives. It was for this quality that he became the inspiration for the trust.

Our first scholars were boys, whose education was liable to become interrupted due to lack of funds, often triggered by a family tragedy. We supported them by part paying their fees at St Andrew’s. Mila our first scholar went on to win an Anglo-American scholarship for Cape Town University and James, the current Harry Birrell Scholar, is most appreciative of the chances it has given him. Our recent projects concentrate on those who would not otherwise have a chance of a quality education.

In 2006 we sponsored a President’s Award Scheme for a week-end whereby the boys from St Andrew’s took the last year group from the Good Shepherd Primary School on a out door event. It was a great success and has been repeated yearly since. The Good Shepherd School caters for Xhosa speaking children, often from poor backgrounds, and teaches in English. It is part of St Andrew’s College’s “Outreach policy” to develop this relationship.

In 2008 Caleb and Abernethi from the Good Shepherd started at Graeme’s School and Victoria Girls High School. In 2009 Aviwe also started at the Diocesan School for Girls. It is our aim to have two pupils each year, from the Good Shepherd, enjoying quality education with ten children being paid for at any one time. To achieve this we will need to increase our income, both by attracting regular subscribers and generous donations.

Peter Phillips, our patron has given us a generous donation and targeted donations can be given for the Patron’s Fund. Please support us in our work which will help to produce young people contributing to the success of Africa.

An Outdoor Weekend event

The charity is a company limited by guarantee, number 3319229. The registered charity number is 1061330. The regular subscription income goes to support the grants together with any investment income. Sufficient capital has been built up to support current commitments (five years is the time spent in secondary school). Our patron is Peter Phillips. The trustees are Stephen Sparrow (chairman), Elizabeth Currie, Andrew La Trobe, Adrian Birrell, Kirstie Heslop and Roger Sparrow (company secretary). The scholarship panel, all education specialists, are based in South Africa and all work done for the charity, including visits to South Africa, is voluntary and not paid.

The fact that it is there for next year will be good news for three lucky winners of our sealed bid auction for pairs of tickets that will take them to the Johnny Herbert Suite at Woodcote corner on the Friday and Saturday of the Grand Prix …. Thanks to MonacoKool for donating these tickets.

I just could not ever see the race going to Donnington, I feel that it was just a ploy by good old Bernie to raise the stakes ! My feelings are that because the first ever World Championship race was held there that is where it should stay………..Roy Craig

The 2009 Johnny Herbert Karting Challenge is now over; I’m beginning to think it should be called the Johnny Herbert Weather Challenge instead! In 2008 we had the first snow of the winter and this year saw a deluge second only to The Lake District!

My ride in to The Raceway Docklands Circuit in South East London started at 6.00am and I encountered gale force winds, driving rain and hailstones………. an eventful journey. Arriving at the circuit was a relief and on entering the Raceways spacious reception area it was a sea of tranquillity in comparison to outside.

Preparations soon got underway and with the drivers registration desk set up my colleagues Simon Wheeler and Neil Morphew eagerly awaited the first arrival, it wasn’t long before the first of the early birds were there and were keen to get signed on and suited up………. The weather did of course play it’s part in disrupting the traffic flow and it wasn’t long before I was getting phone calls and texts from those who faced lengthy queues on the M25 and M11, not to mention the infamous Blackwall tunnel !!

Surprisingly we were running pretty much on time and although he had been delayed, Gareth Jones of “Gareth Jones on Speed” fame was soon carrying out pre-race interviews to entertain the early arrivals who were patiently waiting.

The charity to benefit this year is “The Harry Birrell Scholarship Trust” whose patron, Peter Phillips and charity chairman Stephen Sparrow once worked alongside Johnny in F1, hence the connection for us to help them out this year, more details of this charity can be found on our web site at; http://www.johnnyherbertkarting.co.uk

The teams this year were as always a varied bunch, some of course had taken part in previous years, in fact such is the popularity of this event it’s getting harder to squeeze newcomers in, perhaps that is why Will Dendy and Alan Dove of karting1.co.uk contacted me in May this year to log there entry, even that had been beaten by those teams from 2008 that had stated “put me down for next year please”!!

Stalwarts include “Team Forum” made up from members of Johnny’s web site, Team Evo 6 entered by Lynne Baines from Yorkshire, their star driver Scott Malvern has just been crowned National F Ford 1600 champion in only his 1st year racing cars, Team “Made in Italy 3.0” managed by Andrea Colombo also had a big name star !!! none other than Riccardo Patrese who once again had flown in from Italy to take part along with members of his family, another team of Italian Gentlemen “Sick Boyz” (don’t ask!) was headed by Niccolo Ragnini another previous entrant, Howard Kayman and Lane Bednash who race all year in the Easy Kart championship had also entered again all looking for that elusive win!!

Having missed last years event Robert Crofton returned with his team from “Arbuthnot Latham Private Bank”

Also missing from last years line up but winners from 2007 were “Pacha” named after the London Nightspot, this time “Rebels” was added to their title …….they meant business !!

Herbies Heroes team is always given the No1, mainly because when the event first started celeb drivers were part of every team and you can no doubt guess who was in Herbies ! and yours truly was also a member for some years too, Antony Cannon is now the longest serving driver in that team having been in every event since 1994 with Andy Baker in second slot having joined in 1995 the first year the event was held at The Raceway in Kings Cross and it has been held at The Raceway circuits ever since, The Raceway Docklands is no doubt the only indoor circuit that can cater for an endurance race with 23 teams entered.

Teams new to the challenge this year included “The Odd Shapes” entered by Simon Delamare of Unique Actions, “Kent Ferrari Owners club” entered by Mark McAllister of Giant.com, as mentioned previously karting1.co.uk entered by Will Dendy and Alan Dove, CRS Racing had wanted to enter 3 teams but it was only because of a cancellation in the final week that allowed them in with just one much to the delight of Lindsay Morle. “Racedriversinc.co.uk” had entered two teams with Barry Scott being the organiser.

Honda may have pulled out of F1 but this year saw them come in to the Challenge with a team, this was to be captained by BTCC Champ Matt Neal but alas he could not make it on the day, Honda also very kindly gave us an extra donation to help boost our takings and I thank Sarah Fowler and Joanne Coaker for this.

The most surprising new team to join us must have been Team 23 for in our 16th year it was none other than Johnny’s daughters Aimelia (17) and Chloe (19) and friends …… we all hoped that the genes from Father would be of help!

Although our latest format see’s the celebrity drivers in their own teams some are found elsewhere, James Jakes, GP2 driver was helping out Arbuthnot Latham, Chris Dymond and Tom Ingram were with racedriversinc, Andrew Kirkaldy and Harry Ticknell with CRS Racing, Matt Bell and Karl Haxton helped out the Ferrari Owners Club while Andrew Richardson added some speed to Team Forum.

Last but not least were the celebrity teams, these had been hustled into place as they arrived by Team Forum member Lou Massara, The “Racey Ladies” were Tiffany Chittenden, Sarah Playfair, Louise Richardson and Gemma Ross, “Cars International” headed by the owner Paul Osborn and assisted by GP2 driver Sam Bird, Alex Brundle,Paul Rees and Martin Leach, “Gareth Jones on Speed” had the main man Gareth at the helm with his podcast companion Paul ”ZOG” Ireson, Bradley Ellis, Jake Green, Duncan Tappy and guest journalist Craig Llewellyn, Radio 5 Live who’s producer Jason Swales had entered a great team comprising not only himself but F1 star Anthony Davidson, Alan Van Der Merwe who swapped his FIA medical car duties for a kart ! Johnny Noble from Autosport.com, Andy Stobart from Bridgestone and presenter David Croft, our main man Johnny Herbert was joined, as is becoming the custom, by Johnny Mowlem, they were assisted in the quest to win by Ollie Millroy, James Cole, Wayne Boyd and Dan Clark a formidable bunch!………..

After the mandatory drivers briefing it was time to take to the track for a practice and to set times that would dictate the grid positions, the relative calm of the day was broken by the sound of 23 karts being fired up and spectators jostled for a good viewing position ………… after a hectic session it was The Pacha Rebels who took pole with Made in Italy in second spot.

The next item on the agenda was a bit of fun entitled the “Shoot out” for this we select 4 drivers which in this case to keep the sexist lobby happy we had 2 guys and 2 gals ! these were Tiffany Chittenden and Louise Richardson for the gals and Jo Reilly and Jake Green for the guys, there task was an out lap, a flying timed lap and an in lap each taking a turn in the same kart, it proved to be as entertaining as it always is, but alas I did not record the times to report to you, what I can say is that if it hadn’t been for Tiffany going slightly wide on one bend with the subsequent loss of a couple of tenths she would have no doubt beaten Jo Reilly to the trophy ………. Jo’s it was.

Just 15 minutes later than planned we had the green flag to start out 3 hour endurance race with all teams having their allocated driver for the first stint in place, such are the tactics involved in such an event that most teams will allocate a manager to decide who drives when and for how long.

The next 3 hours were fought hard and fast but at the chequered flag it was The Pacha Rebels who crossed the line with the most laps completed, 248 to be precise 3 laps and 38 secs in front of Team Evo 6 who were 1 lap and 8 secs in front of Made in Italy …fastest lap of the day was set by Racey Ladies driver Sarah Playfair at 41.62 with Made in Italy setting a 41.65 both in the last stints, Pacha’s fastest was a 41.88 but it was no doubt consistency that paved the way to victory.

So there was the result ……1st “Pacha Rebels” …… 2nd “Evo 6” ……3rd “Made in Italy 3.0”

Throughout the day folk were invited to have a go in a ¾ size cockpit of an F1 car provided by Jemlar Ltd with the idea of setting the day’s fastest time, £5 per go added to the days takings and the overall winner who also broke the lap record by 3.5 secs was TKM champion, Formula BMW and Formula Palmer Audi driver Matt Bell, a definite star of the future!!

Another attraction to be held before the podium ceremony was our trackside auction which thanks to some great items made a vast difference to the days takings, these included a ride in a classic Ferrari 250/GTL driven by Johnny Herbert no less and donated by Cars International of Kensington, a Brawn GP cap donated by the new World Champion, Jenson Button, Sebastian Vettel’s fireproof undies ( signed of course ) , a race suit donated by Radio 5 live belonging to presenter Holly Samos but signed also by Jenson and for good measure Johnny decided to auction off his Team Dynamics race suit ………. Yes the one he had on!!

Earlier in the day we had held a raffle and my thanks go to those who donated items which included Mark Webber, Brawn GP, McLaren International and Jemlar Simulators Ltd, special event T shirts had been manufactured and sold by Lee Edgell and supplied by Lisa Cullen.

MonacoKool very kindly donated some places in the Johnny Herbert Suite at Woodcote corner Silverstone at the 2010 British GP ( hoping of course that it will be held there!) which were sold through a silent auction bid and Jake Green had donated a weekend for 4 people in an English Country Cottage.

With Johnny presenting the Trophies to the top 3 teams the curtains came down on another “Johnny Herbert Karting Challenge”

Although I am still counting we grossed approximately £18,000 so a good day indeed for the Charity.

My thanks go to all those people who helped make the event a success and especially to Simon Wheeler, Neil Morphew and his company Arisia for the web site and technical expertise, Michael and Sandra Segal and Jolyon Brand from The Raceway and Photographers Dan Overton, Dave Ayres, Dave Baker and Paula Hamilton.
